Pennsylvania Systems of School Assessment

In 1999, Pennsylvania adopted pennsylvania systems of school assessment standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Mathematics. These pennsylvania systems of school assessment standards identify what a student should know and be able to do at varying grade levels.

The annual pennsylvania systems of school assessment (PSSA) is a an assessment used to measure the pupil�s understanding of the academic standards.

Advanced; Advanced work indicates an in-depth understanding and exemplary display of the skills included in the pennsylvania systems of school assessment.

Basic; Basic work level indicates a partial understanding and limited display of the skills included in the pennsylvania systems of school assessment. There is a need for additional instructional opportunities and increased student academic commitment.

Below Basic; The below basic level indicates little understanding and minimal display of the skills included in the pennsylvania systems of school assessment. There is a major need for additional instructional opportunities and increased student academic commitment.

By assessing all students and assigning them a level in the pennsylvania systems of school assessment, teachers and parents can see where improvements need to take place.
